Estimator
Role Overview
The Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for construction projects, supporting the Commercial and Estimating teams throughout the pre-contract phase. This role involves measuring and pricing works, analysing drawings and specifications, coordinating with supply chain partners, and maintaining estimating records and precedent data to support informed commercial decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare detailed cost estimates, bills of quantities and measurement take-offs from drawings, specifications and tender documentation in accordance with tender requirements.
Analyse tender documents and site information to identify risks, exclusions, provisional sums and opportunities, and reflect these within estimates and assumptions.
Obtain, evaluate and compare subcontractor and supplier quotations, ensuring compliance with scope and programme requirements and recording responses for commercial review.
Maintain and update cost databases, standard estimate templates and precedent documents to promote consistency and efficiency in estimating practices.
Collaborate with design, commercial and site teams to clarify technical queries, validate assumptions and ensure alignment between programme, methodology and cost.
Prepare pricing breakdowns, cost summaries and tender submission documents (electronic and hard copy) for review by senior management and clients.
Support risk management through preparation of contingency allowances, sensitivity analysis and identification of cost-saving opportunities.
Ensure accurate record-keeping within the Document Management System (DMS) and estimating libraries, maintaining auditability of estimating decisions.
Participate in bid meetings, produce minutes, track actions and provide timely updates on pricing progress to stakeholders.
Adhere to company procedures for health & safety, quality and data security in all estimating activities.
Requirements
Proven experience as an Estimator within construction, preferably with a main contractor or consultancy, including experience of commercial tendering processes.
Strong numerical ability and attention to detail, with experience preparing measurement take-offs and bills of quantities.
Competent user of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook; experience with estimating software, cost databases and a Document Management System is desirable.
Good understanding of construction methods, plant, materials and subcontract procurement routes.
Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise workload and meet tight tender deadlines.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to liaise professionally with colleagues, clients, subcontractors and suppliers.
Self-motivated, proactive and solutions-focused with the ability to work effectively as part of a team and under limited supervision.
